Care should be taken when diverting greywater from your bathroom and laundtry due to the chemicals contained in soaps and detergents. Sustainable Gardening Australia has some great tips and useful links for choosing the right detergent.
The Chili Pepper saves the water that normally runs down the drain while you are waiting for the water to get hot, saving thousands of liters of water per year.
The Chili Pepper pumps hot water from your water heater to the tap. The initial cool water is circulated back to the cold water inlet of your hot water service. When the water at your tap is at the desired temperature, the Chili Pepper switches off - turn the hot tap and you get nothing but hot water.
Retails for around $470. Find out more at Neco.
Aerator taps add air to the water coming from taps to reduce water use, while still giving a full-bodied flow. They are inexpensive, easy to install (no plumber needed) and help save water in the kitchen and bathroom.
Available at all good hardware stores.
One millimetre of rain on the average roof generates 250 litres of water. Normally this runs off your property and is wasted. But by fitting a raintap to your gutter downpipe, you can divert that water to your water storage tank, lawn, trees, plants or pool to make maximum use of even light rainfalls.
Available at most hardware stores, the Raintap retails for around $50. Check out the website for more info.
Australians average 8 minutes per shower using up approximately 120 liters of water with a standard shower rose installed. Smaller more efficient shower heads still use approximately 70 liters of water per shower. Multiply this by the number of people in your household and it starts to add up.
For the sake of $30, nick down to your local hardware store and and pick up a water efficient shower rose, or consider a 4 minute shower timer to help you halve your shower time.
Want an easy affordable way to reduce the amount of water you flush down the loo everyday? Whack a brick in your cistern and bob's your uncle. If your toilet has a rather large cistern, then just remove the lid and carefully place a house brick inside where it won't interfere with any of the inner plumbing.
This method will reduce the amount of water you flush down the drain by a litter or more per flush.

RainBank is an automatic controller for rainwater harvesting. RainBank is produced by Davey Products, an Australian designer and manufacturer of water transfer pumps and pressure systems for the rural, domestic, industrial, pool and spa markets. How it works:
- When a toilet is flushed or a washing-machine begins to fill the RainBank system detects this demand and automatically checks to see if there is sufficient water in the rainwater storage tank.
- If there is sufficient rainwater then RainBank switches the supply to this source and completes the demand cycle. Once the demand cycle is complete RainBank automatically switches off.
- If the rainwater supply is depleted at any time during a demand cycle or prior to a demand cycle, RainBank provides mains water to fulfil the demand. In the case of a power failure, RainBank automatically supplies mains water as the backup.
